My
long boring ramble about myself was actually supposed to be an intro to and explanation of the Hebrew/Judaic terms I use often on my journal. So here we go:
Abba: father i.e my father.
Eema: mother i.e my mother.
Bubby: (this is actually Yiddish) grandmother i.e. my grandmother (my abba's eema. My eema's parents are Grandma and Grandpa).
Saba: (this really is Hebrew) grandfather i.e. my grandfather. (Sadly you probably won't be hearing a lot about my saba because he passed away a year ago this August. Although if you check out
my Israel post, you can see that he did some pretty awesome stuff back when he was in the Israeli army fighting for independence back in 1948.)
Shabbat: the sabbath; also sometimes shabbos. It's Friday, 18 minutes pre-sundown to an hour and five minutes after sundown Saturday night. No electricity, so I get on literally *right* *afterwards*.
Shul: synagogue. I go most every Shabbat and pray and sing and hang with my friends and eat food afterwards.
Havdalah: The ceremony (kinda) to end Shabbat.
Torah: Jewish bible, refering to both the text itself AND the scroll that we read in shul on shabbat, Monday and Thursday which looks like
this.
Kippa: Scullcap or yarmulke. I don't wear one because it's for men, but it looks like
this (my abba and the brother right under me wears one like this) or
this (my 2nd oldest brother wears one like this) or
this (my second to youngest brother wears one like this) or
this (my youngest brother wears one of these) (okay, there are a lot of types and everyone in my family wears a different ones) and I might mention them as a marker for how I recognize other Jews.
Talmud: Jewish oral law. This one's complicated, so you get a
link. I have 7 periods of talmud a week in school. I am good at Talmud despite the fact that I hate learning it.
Chumash: Another name for torah. In school, the class where we learn bible- 5 books of Moses, that whole dealio with Creation and Noah and Abraham and getting out of Egypy and trekking through the desert for 40 years- is called Chumash class (3 periods a week; I enjoy it far more than Talmud, which is unfortunate because we get half as much as it.)
Navi: Prophets. Also a class. Twice a week. Also one I enjoy more than Talmud. Also one helplessly downtrodden into a third of the Talmud periods.
Kosher: Jewish dietary laws and restrictions. Now also a word for something that's true or on the up-and-up.
Here's some more info on that.Bar Mitzvah: Boy's coming of age celebration. Happens when he turns 13 (For girls it's called a bat mitzvah and it's at 12). The reason this'll turn up is because my brother's is next week.
If I mention anything you don't understand, totally comment and I'll explain. We'll have popcorn and chocolate and I'll make milkshakes!
